A queerfriendly, safe and welcoming community of fan fiction writers, readers and artists in the AOT fandom.By adults for adults. Multiship. Pro-ship.

AOT + AO3 = AOW

In early 2021, three strangers became friends by chance, reading each other's fics on AO3.None of us were active parts of the AOT fandom at the time. We didn't have Twitter and we didn't know about the wonderful discord communities that already existed. But we craved a place to connect. A place related to writing, since that's how we came into each others lives. Thus, on May 5, 2021, Attack on Writing was born. It was clear from the beginning that even as a small server, it should be a welcoming place for all writers in the fandom. No matter which ship they liked or how many readers they had. If you're kind, you have a place in our community ♥From that day on, we set out to foster a community of (predominantly but not exclusively) writers to support each other in the creation process.Because, well. I think we all agree. Writing is fucking hard. That is why the name Attack on Writing coudn't be more fitting. It's a call to action. Let's get this WIP done!-m.

Q: I'm not a writer. Can I still join?A: Of course. Anyone can join, as long as you're over 18 years old. You don't have to be a creator of any kind. Even if you just want to connect to the fandom in a safe and kind environment, we're happy to have you!

Q: I haven't written anything yet but I want to start. Can you help?A: Definitely! We have plenty of experienced writers and editors on board who can help you get started. We'll motivate you to write, inspire you with prompts and provide advice when you're stuck!

Q: I am looking for a beta reader. Is AOW the right place?A: Generally speaking, yes. However, keep in mind that beta reading is unpaid labor and should always be credited and met with gratitude. If you'd only join so you can have your work beta-read and won't engage with our community at all, there are more suitable resources for you. Such as Needabeta.Read also: AOW Guide to Finding a Beta

Q: Can I offer my beta services?Yes! Even if you have no prior experience with betaing or English is not your first language, you can still offer your services. Just be honest about your language and editing skill level so people know what to expect.

Q: What does pro-ship mean?'Shipping' means you imagine a romantic and/or sexual relationship between two fictional characters. As fan fiction authors, we usually write stories about these ships. Sometimes a ship can be a pairing that would be considered problematic if it existed in real life. For example, if one character is underage while the other is an adult. While many of us tend to age up our characters to adults, not everyone does. The anti-ship stance argues that writers shouldn’t portray unhealthy relationships in fiction. The pro-ship stance argues that fiction is not real life and there is no harm in thinking or writing about fictional characters a certain way.

Q: Why is your server pro-ship?AOW acknowledges that there is a distinct difference between fiction and real life. What you like to read or write about in fiction does not necessarily reflect on your real life preferences, regarding the kinds of relationships you nurture, or what your sexuality is like.We acknowledge that fiction provides a safe space for artistic exploration. It is known that many people work through their real life trauma in their writing, which may result in incredibly dark topics handled in their works. As long as it's tagged correctly—and thus can be avoided—we advocate for 'don't like, don't read'.Since writing is ultimately art and does not harm real people, we believe that fiction should remain free of censorship and taboos. Even if we strongly dislike something, we can coexist with the people who do. Live and let live.On our server, we do not tolerate any kind of ship, fic, kink or creator shaming. However, we make it a point to censor anything that might be triggering to others. Furthermore, you can pick yourself what kind of channels you would like to have access to by role.If you have a vastly different stance on this matter, our community is not a good fit for you.
